Easy Fall Home Decor Ideas to Start the Season

Fall is officially here, aka my favorite season. ♡ There’s just something about this time of year that makes me want to make everything feel a little warmer and cozier, especially at home.

I’m not ready to turn the house into Halloween Town just yet, but I am ready for the cozy blankets, warmer colors, fall candles, pumpkin mugs and all the little things that make it feel like fall.

So before I go all out with the seasonal decorations, these are a few of the easy ways I like to cozy up our home and bring in a little touch of fall without going overboard. ♡

Cozy Up the Living Room

The living room is always the easiest place for me to start. I don’t change anything major, but swapping a few of the things that are already there can completely change the feel of the room.

Bring Out the Cozy Blankets

A good throw blanket is probably the simplest fall swap. I love a burnt orange blanket this time of year because it brings in that warm fall color without feeling like actual fall decor.

I also love playing with texture here. Woven, knit or extra-soft blankets make the couch look cozier and, more importantly, give me something to curl up under once the nights start getting cooler.

Add Some Fall Color With Pillows

Pillows are another really easy way to bring warmer colors or cozy textures into the room. I like pulling from the blanket and mixing in burnt orange, cream and other warm neutrals so everything feels seasonal without being too matchy.

My biggest pillow tip: buy removable, zippered pillow covers. Instead of buying and storing completely different pillows for every season, I can just change the covers. They’re easy to wash, take up basically no room when they’re folded away and make it so easy to add a pop of color for a few months.

Set the Mood for Fall with Scents & Lighting

There’s something about fall that makes me want the house to feel a little warmer and cozier, especially at night. This is when I start swapping in warmer candle colors, bringing back all of my favorite fall scents and turning on all the little lamps instead of the overhead lights.

A Little Candlelight Goes a Long Way

One of the easiest swaps is taper candles. I love warmer shades like burnt orange, burgundy, brown and cream paired with different colored glass candle holders. It adds that little bit of fall color without really feeling like fall decor.

You can use real taper candles or battery powered ones if you want to leave them on throughout the night without having to think about it. I especially love the battery powered ones for little corners around the house where I probably wouldn’t normally light a candle.

It’s Officially Fall Candle Season

This is also when all of my favorite warmer scents start coming back out. Vanilla, cinnamon, salted honey, pumpkin and chai are some of my favorites. Anything that makes the house smell warm and cozy is fair game.

And you definitely don’t need an expensive candle to make the whole house smell good. There are so many affordable ones that smell amazing, which is especially nice when you’re going to have them going pretty much all season.

Cozy Glow + Your Favorite Fall Scent

A candle warmer lamp might be one of my favorite little things for this time of year because you get both: giving off that warm little glow while melting your favorite fall candle and making the room smell amazing.

I also love that it isn’t technically seasonal. I can leave the lamp out all year and just switch the candle underneath depending on the season.

Bring Fall Into the Kitchen

Some of my favorite fall changes aren’t really decorations at all. They’re the little things that start coming back into rotation once the weather changes and I’m spending more time cooking, making coffee and staying in.

Make Your At-Home Coffee Feel a Little More Fall

Once the pumpkin spice lattes and cinnamon cappuccinos start showing up everywhere, I’m ready to start making them at home too.

This is also when I bring my fall-colored glass mugs back out. It’s such a small thing, but somehow making a cappuccino in a pretty amber glass makes an ordinary morning at home feel a little more like fall.

A Pop of Fall in the Kitchen

Even something as simple as switching out the kitchen towels can bring in a little fall. I love warm colors, plaid and subtle fall patterns that add to the cozy feeling without adding more decor.

Cozy Dinners + a Glass of Red

Fall is when my enamel coated cast iron skillet starts making its way back into the kitchen for soups, pastas and cozy dinners. And if I’m cooking, there’s a good chance I have a glass of red wine next to me. There’s just something about a deep red wine at the end of the day while cooking a hearty dinner that feels like fall at home.

Add a Few Actual Fall Touches to Your Decor

This is where I start adding a few things that feel a little more like actual fall decor. I’m still keeping it simple, but warmer colors, natural textures and a few seasonal pieces are enough to start changing the feel of the room.

Add Some Natural Fall Texture

I love faux wheat stems, dried grasses and other warm neutral stems this time of year. The beige and straw colors give that natural fall feel, especially in a warm colored or textured vase.

Okay, Maybe a Few Pumpkins

I’m not ready for pumpkins to completely take over the house yet, but I do love adding a few soft woven or knit pumpkins here and there. I just mix them into the decor I already have out for a little extra touch of fall.
