Late summer to early fall style with jeans, knitwear, red Mary Janes and lifestyle favorites for a seasonal fall reset

September is what I like to call ‘cartoon weather,’ where you can pretty much get away with wearing whatever you want and doing just about anything outside. It’s that time of year when the temperature starts to cool down, but not enough that you can’t still enjoy the warm days ahead.

It’s honestly one of my favorite times of year.  Late summer early fall outfits are also some of my favorite to put together because you can start pulling out a few fall staples without completely packing away your summer wardrobe. You can spend more time outside without melting and get a little reset in before the craziness of the holidays starts.

Here’s a little bit of what I’ll be wearing, where I’m going, what I’m doing, and a few things I’m loving for the season ahead!

What I’m wearing: Late Summer Early Fall Outfit Ideas

The New Go-To Fall Shoe

For shoes, I’ve been grabbing what have easily become one of my favorites over the past few weeks: Mary Janes. They’re so easy to slide on and get out the door while still making an outfit look put together.

I opted for a bold red pair for a fun pop of color with my usual neutral outfits, and I’ve been wearing them everywhere from the office and running errands to casual date nights with my husband. I’m officially deeming them my early fall go-to shoe.

The Two-Piece Made for This Weather

I’ve been loving this matching knit set with a long-sleeve top and shorts for this time of year. The knit fabric gives it that cozy feel I’m starting to want as we head into fall, while the shorts keep it from feeling too warm when the temperature inevitably climbs by the afternoon. It’s comfortable enough to wear while I’m working from home but still feels put together enough to throw on for little errands or a coffee run. Plus, a matching set always makes it look like I put way more thought into getting dressed than I actually did.

The Perfect In-Between Top

An in-between season staple for me has always been a Sleeveless Mock Turtleneck. Throw a sweater over for the brisk mornings, then lose the extra layer once the day warms up. It’s super easy to dress up for work, pair with jeans, or just to lounge around the house. I have them in a few colors, but brown is definitely my go-to for this time of year.

The Classic That Goes With Everything

For bottoms, you really can’t go wrong with a good pair of straight or baggy blue jeans. As a tall girl, finding jeans that don’t look like you just walked out of a flood is VERY important, so I usually stick with brands that carry Tall or Long sizing, like Old Navy and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Where I’m going:

This is probably my favorite time of year to actually be outside because the weather is finally gorgeous.

You can catch me trying new local restaurants, finding cozy cafés that are starting to bring out their fall drink menus, taking a walk by the waterfront, or getting a game of pickleball going with friends and family. I also love using these last few warm weekends to wander around local farms and markets, pick out some seasonal flowers for outside, and just enjoy a slower afternoon with nowhere we really need to be.

It’s that little window where you can still make spontaneous outdoor plans without having to worry about it being unbearably hot or freezing cold, and I fully plan on taking advantage of it.

What I’m doing:

Before the craziness of the holidays starts creeping in, I like using this in-between time to slow down, organize, and reset.

I always think of late summer and early fall as a good reminder to appreciate what you already have. If you have a roof over your head, food on the table, your bills paid, and people you love around you, sometimes it’s nice to stop for a second and actually be grateful for that instead of immediately thinking about what’s next.

Lately, I’ve been going on more mindful walks, getting back into local Pilates and yoga classes, and journaling more. Nothing crazy, just little things that help me slow down and clear my head.

If you’re trying to get into your own little reset, here are a few things I’ve been loving or think are worth having around:

It only takes about five minutes to fill out, but it’s such an easy way to start your day thinking about what you already have while still getting excited about what’s ahead.

A warm vanilla candle

A cozy candle is a must, especially after cleaning and organizing your space. Light one (or turn on the candle warmer), settle in with your journal or a new book, and you’ve basically created the easiest little wind-down routine.

I’ve started getting back into the habit of taking weekly Pilates and yoga classes to help relieve stress and clear my mind. I opted for a thicker, cushiony mat and it has been an absolute game changer during class, while still being easy enough to roll up and carry afterward.

For the Season Ahead

Overall, I think this is the perfect time to experiment with your style, pull out a few fall staples, spend some time outside, and give yourself a little reset before the last quarter of the year and all of the holiday craziness begins.

There’s no need to rush into the next season just yet. I’m enjoying the in-between. ♡
